How to Make Mexican Tortillas in a Firewood Oven

That warm aroma of a freshly baked tortilla is unforgettable. With this easy and delicious recipe, you’ll learn how to prepare homemade tortillas in your traditional oven, perfect for enjoying with family and friends.

At Firewood Oven Puerto Rico, we’re proud to be the island’s #1 expert in building wood and gas ovens, perfect for your home or restaurant. We also design Argentinian-style grills, custom fire pits, and outdoor kitchens that elevate every meal.

Ingredients

  • Corn flour (masa harina)
  • Warm water
  • A pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions (Using a Firewood Oven)

  • Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F).
  • In a large bowl, mix corn flour and warm water until the dough is soft and easy to shape. Let it rest for 5 minutes to fully hydrate.
  • Divide the dough into golf ball-sized portions. Press each between two pieces of parchment paper using a tortilla press, or flatten with a rolling pin.
  • Place the tortillas on a baking tray and bake for 10–12 minutes in your firewood oven until golden and slightly crispy.
  • Remove from the oven and let them cool before serving.

Serve and Enjoy

Once your tortillas are ready, fill them with your favorite taco ingredients like meat, guacamole, salsa, or cheese. Whether it's Taco Tuesday or a weekend feast, your wood oven tortillas will be the highlight of the table.
